Authentic mountain portraits for the class of a lifetime

Book a Senior Session

Senior year is one of those seasons that goes faster than anyone expects — and it's worth slowing down to document. If you're looking for Steamboat Springs senior portraits that actually capture who your student is right now, you've come to the right place.

I'm Andy Barnhart, and I've been photographing high school seniors across the Yampa Valley for over a decade. What I've learned is that the best senior portraits come from sessions that feel relaxed — where there's no pressure to perform, no awkward poses, no forced smiles. Just you, an incredible mountain setting, and a photographer who's more interested in your story than in checking off a shot list.

What Makes Steamboat Senior Portraits Different

Steamboat Springs gives us a backdrop that's genuinely hard to match anywhere else. Within twenty minutes of town, we can be standing in wildflower meadows above 8,000 feet, at the edge of a glowing aspen grove, or along the cottonwood-lined banks of the Elk River. These aren't generic studio settings — they're real places that reflect the adventurous, outdoor spirit most Steamboat kids grow up with.

That said, some seniors prefer something different. If you want portraits downtown — with the character of Old Town Steamboat's brick storefronts and the Yampa River as a backdrop — we can do that too. Senior portraits should feel like you, whatever that looks like. Whether that means hiking boots and mountain trails, or a dress and the warm light of a Steamboat Springs evening, we'll find the setting that fits.

Bringing Your Personality Into the Session

I always encourage seniors to bring what makes them who they are. Do you ski or snowboard at Steamboat Mountain? Bring your gear. Are you in the marching band, on the soccer team, obsessed with your horse, or never without your dog? Let's work all of that in. Senior portraits are about this specific chapter — and this specific person — before they step into whatever comes next.

We can incorporate multiple looks into a single session. Many seniors like to do one more casual, outdoorsy look and one that's a little more dressed up — giving you great options for announcements and the yearbook while still ending up with personal favorites that feel authentic to who you actually are.

When to Book and What to Expect

The best time for senior portraits in Steamboat Springs depends on what you're going for. Summer and early fall offer warm light, green meadows, and that classic Colorado outdoor feel that photographs so well. Peak fall — late September through mid-October — is stunning if you can make it work before yearbook deadlines. Winter sessions are less common but beautiful for seniors who want something that truly captures the ski-town life.

Most seniors book three to six months ahead, especially those shooting in fall or early summer. Yearbook deadlines can vary significantly by school, so it's worth looking yours up early and working backward from there.

Sessions typically run 90 minutes to two hours — long enough to explore a couple of spots and capture a real range of looks without anyone getting burned out or cold. I deliver fully edited, gallery-quality images through a private online gallery, and I'm happy to help you navigate print ordering or getting your images ready for yearbook submission.

Most importantly: the goal is that you feel like yourself in every single frame. I'll keep things moving but low-pressure. The session will go faster than you think, and the images will last a lot longer.

Senior Portrait FAQs

As soon as you have a general idea of when you'd like to shoot. Summer and fall are the most popular seasons, and I typically book up several months in advance during those windows. First, check your yearbook submission deadline — those vary by school and can be earlier than you expect. If you're aiming for fall aspen color, keep in mind that the peak window in Steamboat is only two to three weeks long and fills up fast.

All over the Yampa Valley. Popular spots include the aspen groves and open meadows of Routt National Forest, the trails and falls at Fish Creek, the Yampa River corridor through downtown, and various scenic overlooks and ranch properties around Steamboat. I always want the location to feel like you — if you have a place that's meaningful to you, let's talk about whether it could work for your session.

Most seniors bring two to three looks, which fits comfortably within a 90-minute session. We can often move between locations as we change, so your images feel varied without feeling rushed. Think about what tells your story: something more casual and outdoorsy, something a little more polished, and maybe something that ties in a sport, hobby, or personal interest.

Absolutely — I encourage it. Senior sessions are most meaningful when they reflect who you actually are. Ski gear, a guitar, sports equipment, your dog, a favorite hat, a letter jacket — all of it is welcome. Bring anything that feels like you, and we'll find natural ways to work it in that don't feel forced or staged.

Each school has its own requirements for yearbook portrait submissions — some want a specific background, image size, or format. Check with your school's yearbook advisor or photography department before your session so we can make sure we capture at least one image that meets their specs. I can export images in whatever format your school requires, and I'm happy to help you navigate the submission process.

Plan for 90 minutes to two hours. That gives us enough time to explore a couple of locations, do a few outfit changes, and get a real variety of images — from classic portraits to more candid, personality-driven shots. Most seniors are surprised by how quickly the session goes once they relax into it. You won't feel rushed, but you also won't be standing in a field for three hours.
