Warm, natural portraits in the Colorado mountains

Book a Family Session

There's a particular light that falls across the Yampa Valley in late afternoon — warm, unhurried, golden in a way that's hard to describe until you see your kids running through it. That's why I became a Steamboat Springs family photographer. And it's why families keep coming back.

I'm Andy Barnhart, and for more than a decade I've been photographing families in and around Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Some of my clients are local families who want to document a chapter of their life against the backdrop they call home. Many more are visiting — ski families who've discovered Steamboat in winter, summer vacationers who wander through the Yampa River Botanic Park or hike out to Fish Creek Falls, and couples who came here for their honeymoon and now return every few years with a growing crew in tow.

Whatever brings you to Steamboat, I'd love to help you leave with photographs that actually look like your family.

Why Steamboat Springs Is Special for Family Portraits

Steamboat Springs is a genuinely beautiful place to photograph — which makes my job a little easier. The landscapes change dramatically with the seasons, and each one brings something worth capturing.

Fall is the one everyone talks about. The aspens turn from green to gold almost overnight, and for a few weeks in late September and early October, the whole Yampa Valley glows. Families who time their visit around peak color are rewarded with images that look almost too beautiful to be real — all that warm light filtering through golden trees, with the mountains rising in the background.

Summer brings wildflower meadows along Rabbit Ears Pass, long golden-hour evenings on the Yampa River, and the kind of unhurried afternoons where kids run freely and the stress of real life feels far away. Summer is a wonderful season for families with young children — there's so much natural energy and joy to capture when kids have room to explore.

Winter in Steamboat is its own kind of magic. Howelsen Hill glows against the downtown sky, the ski mountain draws everyone upward, and everyone's bundled in layers that somehow make the photos feel cozier and more personal. Snow sessions have become some of my favorites — kids can't help but have fun in the snow, and that joy is impossible to fake and impossible to miss.

Where We'll Photograph

I photograph throughout the Yampa Valley and Routt County. Every family is different, and I love finding the spot that fits yours. Some favorite locations include:

  • The Yampa River Corridor — especially at golden hour, when the cottonwoods glow and the water reflects the evening sky
  • Fish Creek Falls area — stunning in every season and a natural fit for families who love being outside
  • Routt National Forest — wide meadows, aspen groves, and mountain backdrops just a short drive from town
  • Strawberry Park area — lush and intimate in summer and early fall, with the kind of green that photographs beautifully
  • Downtown Steamboat Springs — old brick storefronts and small-town character tell a story all their own
  • Private ranches and properties — for families who want something truly unique and personal

Have a spot that's meaningful to your family? A trail you hike every trip, a meadow where you always stop? Tell me about it. I'm always open to exploring somewhere new.

My Approach: Real Moments, Not Poses

I'm not going to line your family up and count to three. I might suggest a walk along the Yampa, a game of chase in the meadow, or just a loose afternoon where we wander and see what unfolds. My job is to be there when the real moments happen — the laugh your youngest makes when her older brother chases her, the way you and your partner look at each other when you think no one is watching.

Before every session, I ask about your family. How old are the kids? Do they have a favorite outdoor spot in Steamboat? Is this a special anniversary or just a "we really should finally do this" kind of trip? The more I know, the better I can plan a session that feels natural and unhurried from start to finish.

Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes, and I deliver a fully edited private gallery within two to three weeks. Fall and ski season sessions book well in advance — I'd encourage you to reach out as soon as you know your dates.

Family Photography FAQs

As early as possible — especially if you're visiting during fall color season (late September through mid-October) or over a ski-season holiday week. Those windows fill up months in advance. For summer sessions, four to eight weeks ahead is usually comfortable. For local Steamboat Springs families, I recommend reaching out as soon as you have a general sense of when you'd like to shoot, even if your exact date is still flexible.

Every season has something beautiful to offer. Fall is the most popular for good reason — the aspen color in Steamboat and throughout the Yampa Valley is extraordinary, and the light is softer and warmer than in summer. Summer is wonderful for families with young kids who have lots of energy, and the long golden-hour evenings give us excellent light. Winter sessions take a little more planning but are rewarding, especially for families who ski. There's no wrong answer — it comes down to when you're here and what kind of images feel most like you.

Think layered, earthy, and cohesive — not necessarily matching. Warm neutrals, muted blues, sage greens, and deep burgundies tend to photograph beautifully against Colorado's landscapes. Avoid large logos, neon colors, or overly busy patterns. The goal is to look like yourselves, just a little polished. After booking, I'll send you a detailed style guide that covers what works in different seasons and settings around Steamboat Springs.

Most family sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That's enough time to settle in, explore a location or two, and capture a genuine range of moments — without pushing anyone past their limit. Families with toddlers or babies often do best in a tighter 45 to 60-minute window. We'll talk through what makes sense for your family when we connect before the session.

Yes — a large portion of my clients are visiting families. I know the best light, the most photogenic spots in and around Steamboat, and how to make the most of a limited window of time. Whether you're here for a ski week, a summer camping trip, or a multi-generational family reunion, I'll work around your schedule and do my best to make the session feel easy — not like another item on your to-do list.

Peak aspen color in the Steamboat Springs area typically falls between late September and mid-October, though it varies by year and elevation. Higher elevations — like the forests above Rabbit Ears Pass — tend to turn first, usually in the last week of September. Areas closer to town and along the valley floor follow in early October. The window can be as short as two or three weeks, so if fall color is a priority, some schedule flexibility really helps.
