You said yes — or you asked, and they said yes — and now here you are in Steamboat Springs, one of the most beautiful corners of Colorado, wanting to celebrate that. I'd be honored to be your engagement photographer.

I'm Andy Barnhart, and I've been photographing couples in the Yampa Valley for more than a decade. Engagement sessions are some of my very favorite work. There's something about being newly engaged that comes through in photographs in a way that's hard to replicate — the way you hold each other, the private laughter between you, the just-happy-to-be-here energy. A good engagement session captures exactly that, and Steamboat Springs gives us a setting that makes it feel effortless.

Why Steamboat Springs Is Magical for Engagement Photos

Steamboat Springs is an extraordinary place to be in love with someone. The landscapes here are dramatic without being overwhelming — aspen groves that shimmer gold in the fall, wildflower meadows that bloom through all of summer, and mountain peaks that frame everything beautifully.

Some of my favorite engagement locations around Steamboat Springs:

  • The aspen groves near Rabbit Ears Pass — about 40 minutes from town, but absolutely worth the drive in October when the trees are in full fall color. These are the images that stop people mid-scroll.
  • Yampa River Corridor through Old Town — golden evening light on the cottonwoods, the relaxed pace of downtown Steamboat, and a sense of place that tells a real story.
  • Routt National Forest meadows — open, sweeping, and beautiful in every season. Endless options from pine forest to open meadows to granite formations.
  • Fish Creek Falls area — lush and intimate, with the sound of the falls in the background and light that filters through the trees in a way that's hard to manufacture.
  • Strawberry Park area — a local favorite: verdant, private-feeling, and quietly beautiful in summer and early fall.

Every couple is different, and I love helping you find the spot that feels right for your relationship. Tell me what you love doing together — hiking, skiing, wandering around a new town — and we'll find a setting that fits.

What to Expect from an Engagement Session

Here's the honest truth: most people are a little nervous in front of a camera. That's completely normal, and helping couples past that nervousness is kind of my specialty. We'll start slow — a walk together, something to look at, something to laugh about — and by about twenty minutes in, you'll both start to forget I'm there. That's when the real images begin.

I keep engagement sessions to about 90 minutes — enough time to explore a couple of locations or a couple of looks, without anyone getting cold, tired, or over it. Most couples walk away with 50 to 80 images in their gallery: a range that gives you plenty of favorites for save-the-dates, announcements, and just keeping for yourselves.

Engagement Sessions as Wedding Preparation

If you're also planning a wedding, an engagement session is one of the most valuable things you can do before the big day — beyond the images themselves. It gives us a chance to work together, so you know what to expect from me and I understand how the two of you move together, what makes you laugh, and how to direct you naturally when it matters most.

Many of my engagement clients become wedding clients, and the ease they carry on their wedding day — having already done a session with me — is always noticeable. You've already practiced. You already trust the process. And that shows up in the images.

Engagement Photography FAQs

It depends on the season and the vibe you're going for. For fall color, the aspen groves near Rabbit Ears Pass and throughout Routt National Forest are spectacular. For a more intimate, woodsy feel, the Fish Creek Falls area and trails around Strawberry Park work beautifully. For something with a sense of place and the character of Steamboat town life, the Yampa River corridor in the evening is hard to beat. We'll talk through your vision and find the right match.

Six to twelve months before your wedding is an ideal window, for a few reasons: it gives you time to use your engagement photos for save-the-dates and invitations, it allows us to experience a session together before your wedding day, and it gives you flexibility to wait for a season you love. That said, if your engagement session is more about celebrating this moment and less about wedding prep, any time works — even shortly after getting engaged.

Think cohesive and complementary rather than perfectly matched. Earthy tones, warm neutrals, soft blues, and muted jewel tones all photograph beautifully against Colorado's landscapes. For fall sessions, rich burgundies and warm browns look stunning against the aspen gold. For summer, lighter linen tones and soft greens work well. I'd suggest one more casual look and one that's a little more polished, especially if you want variety for different uses. I'll send along a detailed style guide after booking.

Beyond the images — which are genuinely worth having — an engagement session helps you get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Many couples feel a little awkward at first, and a relaxed 90-minute session together takes care of that. By your wedding, you'll know what to expect, how to relax, and how to be yourselves in front of the lens. It makes a real difference.

About 90 minutes, which is typically the sweet spot — enough time to explore two spots or two different looks, settle into the session, and end up with a range of images that feel varied and genuine. You won't be rushed, but you also won't be out there until the light is gone and you're both exhausted. Most couples are surprised by how quickly 90 minutes passes when the session is going well.

Yes — many of my engagement clients go on to book their weddings with me as well. A Steamboat Springs wedding and an engagement session with the same photographer creates a real sense of continuity, and by your wedding day we already have an easy working relationship. If you're planning a wedding in the Yampa Valley, I'd love to talk about both your engagement session and your wedding photography together.
